Signs Your Water Plant May Need Biological Support

Usual signs of biological instability slowly build up over time. It’s important to recognise these signs before they turn into significant problems. Here are some early signs to look out for:

1. Recurring Organic Build Up Grease, sludge or scum accumulates in tanks, pits or wastewater systems, even after cleaning or chemical treatment. This is often a sign that the biology is not breaking down organics effectively.
2. Unstable Sludge Performance Activated sludge struggles to settle or compact. Clarifiers look cloudy, foaming returns, or sludge volumes continue to increase despite operational changes.
3. Persistent Odours Persistent odours around inlet works, lagoons or sludge handling areas indicate biological stress and the early formation of sulphides and other by-products.

Symptoms of an Unbalanced Biological System

When these signs are left unresolved, they can manifest into a range of problems. Here’s how these issues can affect your systems:

1. Rising Operating & Disposal Costs Poor biological performance leads to higher sludge volumes, more frequent clean outs, increased polymer use, and higher transport and disposal costs.
2. Loss of Process Control When biology is not stable, wastewater treatment becomes reactive. Effluent quality fluctuates, treatment capacity drops, and compliance margins tighten.
3. Affects on Site-Wide Water Systems Inefficient wastewater treatment can affect how cooling tower blowdown and other waste streams are managed. While a bio dispersant for cooling tower systems works inside the cooling circuit, unresolved wastewater issues often sit downstream and continue to create risk.

How Biotifx® Becomes the Solution

At WTS, we apply biological treatments to address the underlying causes of wastewater instability, not just the surface-level symptoms. Biotifx® is used where traditional approaches struggle to control organic load, sludge growth and odour on an ongoing basis.

We combine biological augmentation for wastewater treatment with system understanding, monitoring and field support to restore balance and improve long-term performance.

Biotifx® augmentation includes:

  • Activated sludge enhancing that strengthens existing biology. This process ensures that fats, oils, and organic solids are broken down more effectively, reducing recurring buildup and sludge volumes.
  • Targeted biological augmentation, which introduces selected bacteria and nutrients. This supports biological activity where systems are under stress, improving settling, compaction and overall treatment stability.
  • Support for downstream and site-wide water systems.
While a bio dispersant for cooling tower applications works within the cooling circuit, Biotifx® supports the wastewater systems that receive blowdown and other waste streams, helping stabilise treatment and discharge performance.
  • Integrated application and optimisation applied as part of a broader wastewater treatment program, supported by monitoring and on-site expertise to ensure consistent results rather than short-term fixes.

Our field teams work closely with operators to reduce reactive maintenance, lower sludge handling costs and improve wastewater reliability. With decades of experience across Australian industries, we apply a site-specific approach that combines reliable chemistry, monitoring, and Biotifx® performance.

Biotifx® for Your Cooling Tower

Bio-dispersants for cooling towers are specialised, non-ionic chemical surfactants used to disrupt and disperse microorganisms such as bacteria, algae, and fungi. While it’s not technically a bio-dispersant, Biotifx® has similar properties in how it helps manage biological load across site-wide water systems.

Rather than acting inside the cooling circuit, Biotifx® works as a biological augmentation for wastewater treatment, supporting the breakdown of organic material that can contribute to fouling and instability downstream. Used alongside conventional cooling tower treatments, Biotifx® helps WTS address biological issues at their source, not just where they appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Browse the frequently asked questions below to learn how Biotifx® can help optimise your wastewater treatment process and deliver cleaner, compliant water.

Is Biotifx® a bio-dispersant?

No. Biotifx® is not a chemical bio dispersant used within cooling tower water systems. Bio dispersants work inside the cooling circuit to break up biofilm and improve the effectiveness of biocides.

Biotifx® is a biological augmentation for wastewater treatment. While it does not disperse biofilm in cooling towers, it supports the breakdown of organic material in wastewater and sludge systems that receive cooling tower blowdown. By reducing organic load and biological stress downstream, Biotifx® helps address conditions that often contribute to fouling, odour and instability across site-wide water systems.

What is biological treatment in wastewater treatment?

Biological treatment uses naturally occurring microorganisms to break down organic material in wastewater. These microorganisms consume organic matter as part of their normal activity, converting it into simpler, more stable by products. In industrial and municipal water plants, biological treatment is commonly used to manage organic load, stabilise sludge and improve effluent quality as part of an activated sludge or lagoon based process.

What are the examples of biological treatment of waste?

Common biological wastewater treatment processes include activated sludge systems, aerated lagoons, oxidation ponds and fixed growth systems such as trickling filters. Activated sludge is one of the most widely used methods across industrial and municipal sites, as it allows operators to control biological activity and treatment performance more precisely.

What are the benefits of biological treatment?

Effective biological treatment helps reduce organic load, stabilise sludge behaviour and improve overall wastewater reliability. When biology is balanced, plants often see better settling, lower sludge volumes and more consistent effluent quality. By addressing organic breakdown biologically, operators can also reduce reliance on reactive chemical treatment and manual intervention, leading to improved process stability and lower operating pressure.

How does Biotifx® support biological wastewater treatment?

Biotifx® acts as an activated sludge enhancer by introducing selected bacteria and nutrients to support biological activity where systems are under stress. It is used when existing biology struggles to break down organic material consistently, helping restore balance and improve long term treatment stability.
